Christmas & New Year’s Eve in Grand Cayman 2026: Events, Fireworks & What’s Open

Christmas and New Year’s Eve are among the busiest and most festive times to visit Grand Cayman. Expect warm, dry weather, a big Christmas tree lighting at Camana Bay in mid-November, free fireworks on New Year’s Eve, and a few public holiday closures to plan around.

What is the weather like in Grand Cayman at Christmas?

December is in the dry season, which runs from November to April and averages 2.43 inches of rain per month (National Weather Service). The 30-year average temperature in December is 80°F (26.7°C) (National Weather Service), so you can spend Christmas Day on the beach.

Winter cold fronts, known locally as “Northwesters”, can occasionally bring strong winds and rough seas to the west and north coasts (National Weather Service). Read more in our guide to the best time of year to visit the Cayman Islands.

When is the Camana Bay Christmas tree lighting in 2026?

The Camana Bay Annual Tree Lighting and Holiday Market takes place on Saturday 14 November 2026, from 5pm to 8pm at The Crescent in Camana Bay. This year, performers from the Cayman Music School will lead an attempt to set a Cayman Islands national caroling record, and everyone is invited to sing along (Explore Cayman).

Last season, Camana Bay also ran a nightly Holiday Light Spectacle from 15 November to 4 January, with short light and music shows at 6pm, 7pm and 8pm around its 42-foot Christmas tree (Explore Cayman). The 2026 dates had not been confirmed when we published this article, so check with Camana Bay before you go.

If you are arriving in early November, you can also catch Pirates Week, which runs from 6 to 14 November 2026.

What Caymanian Christmas traditions can visitors see?

The Christmas bush: This native shrub (Vernonia divaricata) blooms purple and white in December, and many Caymanians see it as a sign that Christmas is coming (CaymanVacation.com).

Holiday food: Look out for local treats such as heavy cake, cassava cake, Christmas beef and sorrel drinks (CaymanVacation.com). Our list of the best local restaurants in Grand Cayman is a good place to start.

Tree lightings and carols: Besides Camana Bay, there is a long-running Rotary Club tree lighting at Heroes Square in George Town, plus community carol concerts throughout December (CaymanVacation.com).

Is Christmas a public holiday in the Cayman Islands?

Yes. In 2026, Christmas Day is on Friday 25 December, and Boxing Day is observed on Monday 28 December. Remembrance Day is also a public holiday on Monday 9 November 2026 (Cayman Islands Government).

The public bus depot is closed on Sundays and public holidays (Public Transport Unit), so plan to rent a car or book a taxi on those days.

What is open on Christmas Day in Grand Cayman?

Many attractions close or shorten their hours over the holidays. The Cayman Turtle Centre is closed on Christmas Day (Cayman Turtle Centre). The Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park is closed on Christmas Day and closes at noon on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve (QEII Botanic Park).

The beaches are always open, so Christmas Day is a great day for a swim at Seven Mile Beach. Tours such as Stingray City tours and bioluminescence tours get busy over the holidays, so book early and check which days they operate.

Where can you watch New Year’s Eve fireworks in Grand Cayman?

Seven Mile Beach in Grand Cayman, a popular spot to watch New Year's Eve fireworks

Camana Bay (early, family-friendly): Camana Bay holds a free fireworks show at 8pm on New Year’s Eve, which is ideal for families with young children (Cayman Compass).

Seven Mile Beach (midnight): Hotels and restaurants along Seven Mile Beach set off fireworks at midnight, and you can watch for free from the sand. Public Beach is a popular spot but gets busy (Cayman Compass).

George Town waterfront: In recent years, Seafarers Way in George Town has hosted a free celebration with fireworks at 9pm and again at midnight, with nearby roads closed to traffic (Cayman Compass).

Ticketed parties: In 2025, New Year’s Eve events ranged from free beach fireworks to hotel parties costing up to US$650 per person (Cayman Compass). The best events sell out, so book as soon as they are announced.

How do you get home safely on New Year’s Eve?

On 31 December 2025, the free Purple Ribbon Bus ran from 9pm to 5am, serving all districts of Grand Cayman, as part of the police’s #ArriveAlive345 campaign (Cayman Compass). Look out for the 2026 announcement in late December.

Never drink and drive. The legal limit in Cayman is lower than in most US states. Read more in our guide to driving in Grand Cayman.
